With 169 live events, SS 22 marked the return to in-presence events and people in the street, happy to celebrate a certain return to normality.
So did designers on catwalks: face mask have almost disappeared, leaving space for creativity, futuristic expressions and a lot of sex, maybe the king of the topics and looks, from soft bondage to body chains and very sensual cut-outs.
Some important insights could be read between the lines, like water scarcity, upcycling (draping goes into this direction), maybe the fear of a new conflict (camo and warrior looks emerged, too) and the return of faith, a theme that will reach its peak in 2023 according to our SS 23 forecast.
On catwalks, it seems that a general sense of spiritual renewal and the attention to the invisible matter will be a thing in SS 22. This may be seen in the celebration of air as an element with all its winged creatures, from butterflies to birds and angels, as well as in some clerical look (with the great return of capes), in the talismans, tarots and even some reference to devil and nightmares, often linked to psychedelic escapes.
Apart from pretty fashionable trends like the return of the mini-skirts, the low rise (still here!), the 80’s tailoring and the Y2K fever, which you can have already red about, we bring to you the top 5 trends that will spread in SS 22 according to our divinators.
1. AIRY EVERYTHING After the cozyness of the “puffy everything” trend from past season, designers keep using air as an element while playing with volumes and proportions, this time with a more glamorous direction: airy pieces, from the already spotted massive sleeves to the newly resumed bubble hems – as seen on Prabal Gurung and Carolina Herrera catwalks – promise to be a must during SS 22.
In line with our SS 22 forecast “Pool Party”, swimwear as outerwear have spreaded all-over catwalks, with plenty of inspiration: among them, the bra-suit sets a trend by itself, reaching its maturity after the signals we have been already spotting in the catwalks ss 21 speaking about the cropped top trend.
Worn with low-rise or high-waist pants, the bikini triangle might soon become spring’s unofficial uniform.
3. MONOCHROME DRESSING It seems that tone-on-tone looks will reach their peak in ss 22.
Already celebrated as the trendiest style on the Biden’s inauguration, and more recently proposed by the Kardashians’ (see here and here) , monochrome dressing have finally come back to catwalks. The use of a singular hue was a choice for many designers: among all the colors, yellow hues were the most recurrent – many research centre describe it as a stand-alone trend, while lilac, the lightest cousin of purple shades, is on its way to be among the trendiest shades of 2022.
4. TRIPPY PRINTS Designers keep experimenting with psychedelic prints, as a direction of our forecasted “New new-age” macro-trend, which brings back all the interest for psychedelic escapism.
Kaleidoscopic patterns, swirls -a lot! – and even mushroom drawings were popping out in catwalks, with plenty of examples especially in New York and Paris Fashion Week: look at Rodarte, Brandon Maxwell (historically print-averse), Paco Rabanne, Vetements as the main inspiration.
5. PLUMAGE The element of air is celebrated also with a high use of plumage: designers from all the four cities experimented with dyed feathers and fluffy looks, recalling in some way birds and even angels. Evidence of this tendency can be found in the recurrent butterfly sleeves and in the winged-like capes (as seen at Loewe, J. Simkhai, Simone Rocha, Toga e Burberry).
